public art
Familiar Workshop artists create and fabricate public art for clients of all types. Our focus includes both on our own studio practices, as well as helping to manage and fabricate work from other artists in the region.
Stack
STACK transforms the iconic form of smokestacks, architectural features once prevalent to NoDa’s historic industrial landscape, into an exciting, contemporary, interactive sculpture. The tilted, conical sculpture will have a monolithic presence standing 12’ tall with a 4’ diameter base. The exterior of the sculpture will be covered in overlapping designs based on graffiti and tags providing an energetic surface that further connects the sculptural form to the urban landscape.
Viewers are invited inside the sculpture to experience an intense monochromatic field of color - shown as a fluorescent rust red in the rendering above. Natural light will pour in through the 6-8” aperture at the sculpture’s top while offering inhabitants a view of the sky.
Commission for Wood Partners completed in the summer of 2019. Project facilitated by Hodges Taylor Gallery.
Stonewall Strata
Stonewall Strata was completed for Crescent Communities at the Novel Stonewall Station development. The three shade structures activate and accentuate the private plaza that is adjacent to the Lynx Blue Line Light Rail Station. Each panel is created from powder coated laser cut aluminum on a steel structure. Familiar Workshop designed the aluminum panels and facilitated the installation and lighting design.
PWC Wall Relief
Todd Stewart was commissioned by Sozo Gallery to create this site specific installation for PWC in the Hearst Tower in Charlotte, NC.
